Merapi Volcano
Mount Merapi or Gunung Merapi is a conical volcano located on the northern part of Yogyakarta and has elevation 2.968 meters above sea level.
It is the most active volcano in Indonesia and has a very large eruption in 1006 is claimed to have covered all of Central Java with ash.
In October 2010 was the last eruption of Merapi Volcano and more than 10.000 villagers were evacuated as lava and the pyroclastic flows are known locally as “ wedus gembel” (shaggy goat in Javanese ).
At present the volcano is still active and it often pours out the lava, The Sultan ( King ) of Yogyakarta hold a ceremony to bring offerings to Merapi in order to keep the volcano quite.
